A Week of Art, Food, and Culture in Madrid

March 15-22, 2023

Join a group of adventurous travelers to explore Madrid, capital of Spain and site of splendid architecture, art, food and wine. Our trips offer the perfect balance of planned activities and time to explore the city on your own.

$4798 per person, with no single supplements to pay.

We’ll stay for a week in the four-star Hotel Vincci Soho, in the centrally-located Las Lettres neighborhood, and walkable to shops, plazas, museums, and restaurants. The hotel has a circus theme, complete with carousel horses, backstage ropes, blocks and pulleys, and a carousel bar! But we really chose it for the location and for the amazing breakfast buffet is included.

Oh, the restaurants! You will find seafood, tapas such as batatas bravas, and churros with a rich chocolate dip, and lots more. Madrid is worth the trip for the food alone.

But we’ll do lots more than eat. We will visit Madrid’s most famous sites such as the Palacio Real (The Royal Palace), the world-famous Prado Museum, and Plaza Mayor. In addition, we will visit two smaller art museums, one housing a formerly private collection and the other with an extensive collection of modern art. If you love modern art, this trip is for you!

On another day, we’ll take a day trip out of town to Toledo, a Unesco World Heritage Site. Toledo is a stunning walled town on a hilltop with a Synagogue, a Mosque, and a Cathedral; people of all three religions have lived peacefully together for centuries. Toledo is known for its steel manufacturing and exquisite inlaid art.

In addition to our planned activities, you’ll have plenty of time to explore Madrid on your own. You might simply stroll along Grand Via, stopping every now and then for coffee, or churros, or tapas and visiting the bustling Mercado de San Miguel. You can stroll through Retiro Park, or sip a glass of cava lakeside and watch the boaters.

We’ll move about the city as the locals do, using the Metro and city buses. Each evening, we’ll gather in the hotel before dinner for a glass of wine and conversion, and then break into small groups to choose where you’d like to dine.

March is a wonderful time to visit Madrid. The tourist hordes haven’t arrived yet, and it’s still cool enough to enjoy walking all over the city. Daytime temperatures should be in the high 50s, often with a gentle breeze.

Please note that we may make changes to this itinerary in response to unexpected closings, road conditions, weather, or other unforeseen events. And, although this is a very full itinerary, remember that you always have the choice to take a day or part of a day off to pursue your own interests, or just to stroll the beautiful streets of Madrid.

March 15-22, 2023

Friday
Depart from home for your overnight fight to Madrid. (Airfare not included in the trip price.)

Saturday
Arrive in Madrid following your overnight flight. It’s an easy 30 Euro fixed-fee taxi ride from the airport to the Vincci Soho hotel, and we will let you know if other trip participants are scheduled to arrive at about the same time you will. Depending on the timing of your arrival at the hotel, you might want to walk to El Retiro Park or start exploring the enticing Las Letras neighborhood.

5pm. We meet in the hotel’s lobby for our opening reception with wine and snacks.

Sunday

After enjoying the breakfast buffet at the hotel, gather in the hotel lobby at 9:15 am to stroll to La Latina neighborhood for the famously large and rambling El Rastro street market, a pop-up market that is only open on Sundays and holidays. You can find all sorts of vintage and local goods at El Rastro. Gina will depart for the hotel at 1 pm; the market wraps up around 3pm if you want to stay later. We recommend having a foldable tote bag in your purse or backpack for purchases–all week!

Gather in the lobby at 6:00 pm for wine and snacks and to discuss the next day’s itinerary; then we will walk to a Flamenco show–a wonderful art dance and percussion art form famous in Madrid. Tickets to the show (with a free glass of wine!) are included.

Monday

Gather in the lobby at 9:15 am. We will take a stroll to the Museo del Prado, the most famous art museum in Madrid, which contains the work of great European artists such as Velázquez, El Greco, Goya, Tiziano, Rubens, and El Bosco. Entry into the museum and audio guide are included. We recommend the museum cafe for lunch. You may want to stay all day! If not, you are close to Retiro Park and the Cibeles fountain.

Gather in the lobby at 6:30 pm for wine and snacks and to review the next day’s itinerary.

Itinerary

Tuesday

Gather in the lobby at 8:30 am.

We will take a full day trip to the walled city of Toledo, a Unesco World Heritage site, where Christians, Muslims, and Jews have lived together in peace for centuries. Toledo is known for its special steel that is used to make knives, swords , and armor.

We will enter the walled city via the escalators, then walk through the narrow cobblestone streets. We will tour the Santa Iglesia Catedral Primada de Toledo, where you can view El Expolio (The Disrobing of Christ), a famous painting by El Greco depicting the moment before Christ was stripped for crucifixion (ticket and guide included). We will also include a ticket for you to visit El Greco’s largest painting at Santo Tome. The masterpiece depicts the burial of Count Orgaz; we recommend you visit during the afternoon.

You will have several hours to dine, shop, and explore on your own before we meet in the afternoon to return to Madrid. Round-trip transportation (about an hour each way) and tickets to the Catedral and Santo Tome are included.

Review of the next day’s itinerary will be on the trip back to Madrid.

Wednesday

Gather in the hotel lobby at 9:15 am. We will take the Metro to the Palacio Real, the Royal Palace of Spain, and enjoy the stunning views of the city looking west from the courtyard. The Palace is lavishly decorated, and the audio tour will explain the history of Spain’s Royal Family. Admission to the Palace and the audio tour are included; before you turn in your audio guide you may wish to purchase tickets for the separate tour of the Armory or the Kitchen. No photography is allowed inside the Palacio. Tickets for the main Palacio tour and the audio guide are included.

Afterwards, you can join us at 11:30 am at the Palacio exit to stroll through the San Miguel food market to the Plaza Mayor, the largest and most important plaza in Madrid, with lots of restaurants nearby, including the famous San Gines seller of churros and chocolate—we’ll even explain how the line works. Meet at 12:30 pm at San Gines if you would like to stroll back to the hotel with us.

Alternately, after touring the Palacio, you may prefer to dine at one of the lovely outdoor cafes around the Opera House, and then tour the Catedral de Santa Maria across from the Palacio Real or stroll through the Campo del Moro gardens on your own in the afternoon.

Gather in the lobby at 6:30 pm for wine and snacks and to review the next day’s itinerary.

Thursday

Gather in the lobby at 9:30 am for the short walk to the Lope de Vega house. This house is a wonderfully restored home that is typical of a Spanish Golden Age home in the early 1600s. We will then walk to the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. The museum hosts a formerly-private collection of works with an emphasis on impressionist works, including major works by lesser-known artists and minor works of well-known artists, including many Rodin statues. The museum cafe is a lovely spot for lunch.

Gather in the lobby at 2:00 pm. DeAnne will take you via Metro to visit the Reina Sofia museum to see Picasso’s Guernica, one of the most important of his works here in Spain. It’s the enormous painting he created as a protest of the Spanish Civil War. There are many other Spanish artists here, plus a central garden space. If you love cubist and other modern art, don’t miss this!

If you’ve had enough of art museums, we will help you with a custom plan–let us know a few days before. If you haven’t been to Retiro Park, you might want to go this morning. Or, you may wish to hop on the Metro to visit the Templo de Debod—an Egyptian temple donated to Spain in thanks for relocating treasures when the Aswan dam was built; it is located just north of the Palacio Real, respectively. There’s also an interesting Naval Museum near the hotel.

Gather in the lobby at 6:30 pm for our wrap-up wine session!

Friday
Everyone leaves the hotel, either for your onward journey home or elsewhere.

A Few Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Who should come on this trip? Do I need to speak Spanish?
This is the perfect trip to take by yourself; you’ll make new friends and will always have people to do things with if you like. Or come with a friend or spouse or partner. This is a great trip for mothers and daughters come together, or for high school or college friends to have a mini-reunion. You can spend time with each other and also have time to pursue your separate interests. The trip is perfect for any small group that wants to travel together but doesn’t want the hassle of planning it all in advance.

Q. Do I need to speak Spanish?

You don’t need to speak Spanish, as nearly all restaurants and museums have English-speaking staff. It’s great to learn a few key phrases as part of the experience, but don’t think you should stay home if you don’t speak Spanish.

Q. Do I have to pay a single supplement?
No. This trip is priced based on each person having his or her own hotel room.

Q. I’m coming with a spouse or partner and we want to share a room. Do we both have to pay the full rate?
For people who share a room, we offer a discount of $150 each. We’ve priced the trip primarily for people to have their own rooms, because Spanish hotel rooms just aren’t as large as those in the U.S. But of course you can share a room if you prefer.

Q. How many people will be on the trip?
The maximum number of trip participants is 18, so you won’t feel like you’re part of a huge group. There’s a 12-participant minimum group size, so please don’t buy your plane tickets until we confirm to you that we have reached the minimum group size.

Q. Why do you call this a “trip” and not a “tour”?
We’ve included the things we like best about group travel, such as the convenience of having someone plan daily itineraries, but there are lots of things we dislike about tours, so here’s how this trip is different:
- You’ll never be herded onto a big tour bus with a lot of strangers.
- You won’t follow a tour guide, trying to keep up through crowded museums.
- You won’t be seated at long tables for big group meals at “We accept bus tours” restaurants. Instead, we’ll suggest authentic places for you to eat in small groups.
- You won’t have early morning calls to leave the hotel.
- You only unpack and pack once. We’ll venture outside of Madrid one day, but most of our focus is on the city itself.

Q. Tell me about the trip leaders.
Gina Stewart has been organizing informal groups of travelers for years, from graduate school friend reunions to 10-12 adventures trips per year with her women’s outdoor adventure group the Bold Betties, where Gina serves as an Alpha Bettie. Gina loves people, food, art, history, and architecture, and can’t think of a better way to spend an evening than sipping wine in grand European squares. Gina is registered US Patent Agent and when she is not travelling, she consults with corporate clients on their intellectual property strategies.

DeAnne Dotson has traveled the world, mostly solo. DeAnne has also organized groups of volunteers to put on major festivals or furnish apartments for refugee families. DeAnne also excels at problem-solving, such as when a client was injured during a flight; DeAnne arranged for transportation of the clients’ suitcases to the hotel and also helped with transportation from the hospital emergency room to the hotel. That particular client still enjoyed the trip, despite having a few stitches and being sore! DeAnne loves to share her experiences—so if you are thinking about a future solo trip, DeAnne has likely been there and can give pointers for future travel.

Q. What’s the best way to fly to Madrid?
We recommend an overnight flight from a major airport. Since we live in North Carolina, we often take the American Airlines overnight flight from Charlotte to Madrid.

Q. What is the Hotel Vincci Soho like?
The hotel has an utterly charming circus theme, complete with carousel horses and a giraffe! The bar was once a carousel. The hotel keeps cold flavored waters in the lobby just as you pass through the front door; the lemon mint is our favorite! There are expansive lobby areas to chat with your fellow travelers, and an amazing breakfast buffet. The hotel has an excellent restaurant that includes a beautiful courtyard. The rooms are well-appointed with plush bathrobes, a hairdryer, an iron and ironing board (though we personally are stretch knit afficionados) and a small refrigerator. We are in the heart of the Las Lettres neighborhood with lots of shops and tapas restaurants. There are two lovely plazas 1-2 blocks from the hotel with a variety of restaurants.

Q. Is there internet access at the hotel?
Yes, free wifi comes with your room.

Q. What will the weather be like?
It’s impossible to predict any weather accurately these days, but generally late March in Madrid is terrific for walking around – cool and sunny during the day (highs in the high 50s), cooler at night. Rain is always a possibility, of course.

Q. What to wear?
Wear what’s most comfortable and pack layers. Jeans are acceptable almost anywhere, except for the very nicest restaurants. It’s considered polite to cover your shoulders in many churches, but you probably won’t be going sleeveless in March.

Don’t forget your raincoat or umbrella, just in case. You’ll need a warm jacket and maybe a scarf for evening. Most important: comfortable walking shoes.

Q. Why aren’t lunches and dinners included in the price?

Restaurants that accept tour groups are the last places we want to eat and there are just so many delicious choices for meals in Madrid that we want everyone to be free to eat where and when they want. One day you might eat a sandwich for lunch, sitting out on a plaza; or you might choose to browse the local food markets.

Alternatively, we often make lunch the biggest meal of the day, maybe even eating at a restaurant that would be too pricey at night. You’ll choose where you eat, with whom, and how much you want to spend.

Q. Is it safe to walk around by myself at night?

Yes. As in any city, it makes sense to be aware of your surroundings after dark. But in Madrid it’s usually quite safe to be out on your own or with a friend in the evenings.

The most prevalent crime is pickpocketing, which mostly happens in areas where there are crowds of tourists. Pickpockets are wily, so we recommend that you leave most of your money, credit cards, and passport in the safe in your room, taking with you only what you need for the day. A handbag that you can sling over your shoulder and tuck high under your arm (with a good zipper) works better than bags with long straps that dangle below your waist. And never sling your handbag over the back of a chair; that creates a very tempting target.

Q. Do you require us to buy travel insurance?

We very strongly recommend it. Reasons for cancelling a trip can happen suddenly. Please read the Terms and Conditions carefully to see our cancellation policy. Also be aware that trip insurance companies are very strict about what they will and won’t reimburse you for, so read their policies closely as well.

You’ll want to be insured for both trip cancellation and medical treatment and evacuation. Many insurers require you to enroll as soon as you pay your deposit, so don’t wait. There are many websites which offer comparison information about trip insurance.

Note that if you are on Medicare, it does not cover services outside of the United States, so you definitely will need medical coverage.

Q. Some friends are going to be in Madrid while I’m there. Can they come along with us?
Because we want to keep our groups small, we can’t invite your friends to come with us on our daily excursions. But you can bring them to our evening get-togethers. Please give us a day’s notice, and there’s a €20 per person charge for the wine and snacks.

Q. When do I need to sign up by?
The sooner you put down your deposit, the better. We limit the size of the group to 18, so it’s best to reserve as soon as you think you’d like to come.

Q. If I want to stay longer than six days, can you arrange that?

Yes. We can arrange for you to stay on at the hotel at your own cost, although our trip will be over. If you’d like to arrive early, we can also make those reservations for you. We may not be there to greet you if you come early, but it’s okay if you want a day or two on your own before the official trip starts.

Please read this information carefully, as payment of a deposit represents your acceptance of the following Terms and Conditions.
